I am an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Pikeville. In addition, I also continue to work as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Memphis teaching public speaking and as a graduate adjunct faculty member for Southern Utah University teaching a variety of graduate level courses. Within these capacities, my personal goal is to refine my pedagogical approach as a University level educator while simultaneously creating programming aimed at assisting underserved students. My primary research agenda is grounded in the rhetoric of apology and, more specifically, in the contexts of political communication. Secondary research agendas I hold include interests in Health communication/palliative care, digital pedagogy technologies, and first-year experience programming. As you explore my portfolio, it is my hope that my reflective works demonstrate my commitment and passion to education and our students' future. |
While studying for my undergraduate degree I realized that I wanted to become a teacher in higher education. This decision was influenced by a professor who was compassionate, dedicated, and invested in her students. Such characteristics made the difference in my success as a student and individual.
Today, I continue this tradition as an educator. The classroom for me is a place where growth, experimentation, and understanding can be properly fostered. As such, I do not take my role lightly and attempt to convey this same care and dedication. Teaching and mentoring are my passion. It is here where I believe I can make the greatest difference through making curriculum relevant not only in careers of my students but their vocational endeavors and life overall. |
As a former student athlete, I understand the work and dedication it takes to perform on the court and in the classroom.
I have fortunately been blessed with the opportunity to serve as a Volunteer-Assistant Coach with the UPIKE Women's Volleyball team. Within this role, I am privileged to work alongside student-athletes; providing support in their athletic and scholarly endeavors. In turn, I have been able to garner greater understanding and empathy for our student-athletes. Serving in this capacity has proven to be beneficial as I am able to demonstrate my commitment to my students and institution. |
During my career, I was asked to serve in an administrative role and tasked with creating programming for our First and Second-Year students.
As the Assistant Director of the First-Year Experience, I was tasked with creating events that assisted First-Year students in their transition to college. In addition, I assisted in creating curriculum for the First-Year Studies course that is required for all First-Year students to complete. I transitioned to a similar capacity as the Director of the Second-Year Experience and found great success here as well. These appointments afforded me the opportunity to assist students on a programatic level and allowed me to gain insights into our student's needs. |
